The
Bastion
Natives of Nanaimo on Vancouver
Island, British Columbia will recognize this landmark. Built as a replica
of the Bastion, this birdhouse is designed to act as a home for nut hatches
or finches. The Bastion, one of the last remaining forts of its kind on
the continent, is Nanaimo's most historic landmark. It was built overlooking
the harbour by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1853, and was operated by the
Native Sons of British Columbia. Historians will note that the entrance
has been designed as per the Bastion's original resting place and not
as it appears in its new location, across from the Dorchester hotel.
