"My good friend Barbara Black helped me with these..... OK, so I've never actually met Barb but I'm practicing for the SchmoozeFest." - Vicky
Q: Where am I?
Welcome to the fifth annual Victoria Independent Film and Video Festival. Please tuck in your napkin before feasting. Feasting, gorging, snacking on film is the desired goal.  If your appetite is large you will have already purchased the VIP, Forum, or Film Pass. For smaller appetites, try the Film Buff Pass.
Q: This spread looks good. What's an "independent film"?
Do any of these ring a bell?: The Full Monty, Smoke Signals, Margaret's Museum, The Sweet Hereafter. They're all independent films whose origins were independent of major studios (although some end up being distributed by them). Some of the independent films and videos (or "indies") you are about to sample are being screened for the first time or have yet to be distributed.
Q: What's on the menu?
Film food on offer this year includes 18 features, 50 shorts, 12
documentaries, and 1940s experimental films. For your feasting pleasure, the dishes are 50% Canadian and 50% international.
Q: Are there any regional dishes to feast on?
Yes, check out the Celebration of Emerging B.C. Filmmakers or the Celebration of Aboriginal Filmmaking.
Q: Any appetizers to sample?
How about an NFB retrospective which includes some all-time favourite animation (The Cat Came Back; Bob's Birthday), as well as some less well-known, but intriguing documentaries (Waiting for Fidel; Flamenco at 5:15).
Q: What's for dessert?
Sample the video art installation at Famous Players Capitol 6.
Q: Is there any entertainment in between?
No tableside violinists or belly dancers, but there's something even better: a veritable smorgasbord of activities, including discussions, workshops, talks/chats, panels, and master classes on just about every aspect of the film industry.  Whether your goal is to educate yourself, network, or just plain indulge, you can learn about the technical, artistic, legal, practical, and financial sides of filmmaking.
Q: I'm a morning person. How about breakfast feasting?
Try the writer's breakfast at the Empress (Saturday, Jan. 30).
Q: Who are those people at the table in the back? How come they get a three-course meal?
Those are the jurors. They view hundreds of entries and go through three jury rounds to select the films and videos on offer. Their backgrounds encompass filmmaking, film distribution and production, entertainment law, film editing, film writing, communications, animation and more.
Q: Is that the Canadian director-producer-writer Anne Wheeler over there?
Hey, there's John Pierson, the "godfather" of indie film! Look at all these people! These are but a few of the high-calibre guests appearing at this year's indie film and video festival - directors, actors, writers, editors, producers, casting directors, film composers, representatives, lawyers, special effects technicians, and cinematographers (check out the Bios).
Q: This is an incredible buffet. What can I hope to get out of it?
You'll experience new voices, new visions, varied perspectives, and participate in the ever-growing indie community. You'll enjoy viewing
experiences not available in other venues. Join and support independent filmmakers as they explore, explicate, and animate stories they believe need to be told.
