Our 1999 Fall Report

Although it happened over a year ago we still encounter people who don't know that our office moved in May 1998. After nearly 25 years at the same location, we have moved to a new home right across the street at #409 - 1755 West Broadway.   Feel free to drop in and try our coffee.

Sherry Lund is the Match Counselor for Surrey, Delta, White Rock and Tri-Cities (i.e. Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam).     In addition Sherry is responsible for the Abbotsford/ Lower Fraser Valley Program covering Abbotford/Matsqui, Aldergrove, Mount Lehman, Chilliwack, Langley, Mission, Haney and Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge.

The VGPS School Grandparenting Program. in elementary schools is  very successful.    During the 1998 -- 1999 school year we had school grandparents at  five schools: Grandview/Tuuqinak'uuh and University Hill schools in Vancouver, Maple Lane in Richmond, Brentwood Park in Burnaby, and Martha Currie in Cloverdale.    We have had  many requests for school grandparents for this fall and there are some places still open in the Vancouver program, so if you are interested in participating, or know of someone who is interested, please call our office.    This program is supported by Multiculturalism BC Community Liaison Branch and the Vancouver Sun Children's Fund.

The VGPS Canadian Expansion Program is disseminating our program model in communities across Canada under a special project, funded by the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, which will continue through August 2000.    We are also expanding provincially with programs in Prince George and Quesnel, and also in Smithers under the umbrella of the Smithers Community Services.  We have received a grant from the Vancouver Foundation to enable us to continue to initiate programs in the interior of BC.

Our local Lower Mainland Program has enjoyed excellent public relations over the past year and we hope to continue this trend in the future. We have had articles featured in a number of community newspapers, as well as in the Vancouver Daily Province, BC Woman Magazine, and the Royal Bank Employee Newsletter.    Our thanks to BC Gas for sponsorship of our very successful program involving placing advertisments in Transit shelters in Vancouver.    We would also like to thank the City of Vancouver for providing space and to Pattison Outdoor who gave us excellent locations in the centre of the city.
