This page is a personal introduction to St. John Jiu-Jitsu located at 2306 St. Johns St. in Port Moody, B.C.

At our Dojo we train hard and explore new ways of exercising our philosophy of the "Flexible Art". Training to combat the unknown, an intangible element, leads us to prepare ourselves in many ways, both mentally and physically.

We strive to not only teach self defense, but to increase each student's self confidence, leadership skills, physical fitness, inner discipline and to instill a respect for others. Each person contains qualities that are unique and are to be cultivated. Attitudes and egos do not make a martial artist and they are counter-productive to respect.

Dojo Philosophy - To train in the various components of Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu, with an emphasis on understanding how the human body works, its strengths and weaknesses, and applying that knowledge to defend oneself, or another, according to the various levels of threat on the force-continuum scale. Training is practiced in a respectful and positive atmosphere to foster goodwill and an open-minded attitude.

All classes begin with 20 minutes of cardio, strength building and stretching excercises, followed by breakfalls and various self defence techniques. Belts are awarded when an individual has fully mastered the techniques determined for that level.

WHAT IS JIU-JITSU?

Jiu-jitsu is a system of self-defense where strength and size are not as important as technique. The Can-Ryu system of jiu-jitsu emphasizes throwing, kicking, striking, blocking and joint locking to immobilize your opponent. Heavy emphasis is also placed on learning how to fall properly, strength training, stretching, power striking, nerve point manipulation, close quarter and ground grappling techniques.

ORIGINS

The roots of jiu-jitsu go back over 2,000 years and are deeply embedded in Japanese history. Jiu-jitsu is a martial art further developed by the warrior class of Japan, and is often defined as the art of flexibility. It can be said that jiu-jitsu is the single most important Japanese martial art, because the modern systems of judo, aikido, hapkido, nippon kempo and some systems of karate-do, all have their roots in jiu-jitsu. The use of striking, blocking, ground defense, throwing, joint locking and strangulation techniques and the use of weapons - encompassing the whole combat spectrum - makes jiu-jitsu the most effective and complete martial art.
