Minutes June 18, 1999 Minutes of SLFS Meeting 1700, Friday, June 18th, 1999 PRESENT Tara, Annette, Emmanuel, Meghan, Rupinder BANKRUPTCY ACT (Meghan) * Students get a loan because they have no assets; they cannot declare bankruptcy because judges know that they don't have assets; students have to work. * BC5 - 2year limit and BC36 -10year limit are fundamentally the same bill * Most are willing to say that it is discriminatory (i.e. judges, NDP and Reform, Libby Davies has appealed it) *Aside on the divorce act: if husband goes to medical school, wife cannot say that she put him thru it because education *doesn't* count as an asset. OFFICE DOOR * Tara to stick a combo lock with key inside on the door to make it accessible to everyone. CHARITABLE STATUS (Emmanuel outlined...) * Advantages (i.e. no income tax...) and disadvantages (i.e. must be doing charitable activities...all profits to charity, only 20% can be allotted to unrelated items...); * Things we need (preliminary budget and list of directors) * SLFS needs to decide which category it falls under (Education or Beneficial to community - probably latter) and state why. * The entire process takes approximately one year. * Emmanuel to clarify SLFS responsibility for providing or not providing T4s. LITIGATION COMMITTEE * Official motion passed to have April Lee, David MacFarlan, Jason Farrer and Meghan Whittaker-Vandusen on SLFS litigation comittee. * Tara to talk to Jaime about possibly organizing their getting together with Amir and Susan. TENANTS' ISSUE * Tara to meet Boyd Piper ( Tenant's Rights Action Coalition) and Chris Gawronski on Mon. 930am. * Chris has written a letter. * Response to Chris' letter by Herald who basically said that there is no reason to pass a motion like this because it is already the law...it's redundant to ask us to obey the law. * SLFS will write a letter after the AMS has. Meeting adjourned at 1740. Minutes by Rupinder Sohal.STUDENT LEGAL FUND SOCIETY |
