Biographies of Directors and Litigation Committee Members Aniz Alani , is an Arts One student at UBC and is one of the directors of the Student Legal Fund Society. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree with concentrations in Political Science and Philosophy. Besides his involvement in the SLFS, Aniz is a First Year student representative on the Faculty of Arts Council. He also serves on the Cabinet of British Columbia Youth Parliament. He plans to pursue a career in litigation. John Briner recieved his B.A.(UBC) in Music and Germanic Studies and is currently in his first year in the UBC Faculty of Law. John is a member of the Litigation Committee and one of the directors of the Student Legal Fund Society. His primary interest is in labour and constitutional law, and he plans to pursue a career in litigation. Besides his involvement in the SLFS and Litigation Committee, John is a member of the Faculty Council Student Caucus as well as several other faculty committees. He also participates in the Law Students' Legal Advice Program, which provides legal advice to low-income clients in the Vancouver area. His other duties include working for the UBC Law Review, acting as representative for the Law School Articling Committee, and teaching part-time at a private Business College in Vancouver. Tara Ivanochko, B.Sc. (UBC) is a M.Sc candidate in oceanography. Tara has been active on UBC campus over the past five years as an Executive Officer of the AMS (1995-96), a member of the UBC Board of Governors (1996-97) and more recently as a Director of the SLFS. Tara has been active in campaigns against increases in tuition and against barriers to post secondary education. Chris Eaton is a general arts student at UBC, planning to major in History and Geography. In addition to his involvement with the SLFS, Chris sat or sits on several advisory and steering committees for the Vancouver Parks Board, Vancouver School Board, the City of Vancouver, and various agencies of the Provincial Government. He plans to pursue a career in paperwork. Bev Meslo Having been an activist on women's issues for many years; involved in the Social Justice Coalition of Ontario and the Council of Canadians, Bev returned to University in her late forties to continue her study in Politics. Her central issues of interest were First Nations and the Baby-boom seniors. Upon returning to University and becoming involved in the Student Union Movement, Bev has been an active representative in both the Arts Undergraduate Society and the Alma Mater Society. As a student, she has put her interest in social justice to use both within those societies and on campus in general. Annette Muttray studied biology at the University of Jena, Germany and received her MSc in Microbial Ecology at the University of Aberdeen, UK. She is currently enrolled in the PhD program at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at UBC. As an international student she was faced with a sudden and dramatic increase in international tuition fees in 1996 and decided to participate in a legal challenge to uphold the provincial tuition freeze at UBC. Recognizing the capacity of law to further the interests of students and acknowledging the need for funding of such actions, Annette helped to organize the referendum and founding of the Student Legal Fund Society. In the past year, she has served on the Board of Directors. Annette is also interested in environmental law and is involved in the RCMP Public Complaints Commission's Inquiry into the APEC incidents of 1997. Amir Attaran , is a lawyer (LL.B., UBC) and, in a previous life, a biologist (D.Phil., Oxford). He is an environmental lawyer at Sierra Legal Defence Fund in Vancouver, where he toils amid the entrails of administrative and constitutional law. Together with Michael Hughes, Annette Muttray, James Pond and Mike Thoms, Amir drafted and fought a successful judicial review against illegal tuiton fee increases at UBC. He later co-founded the SLFS with many of these same people. Amir serves on the litigation advisory committee of the SLFS, and enjoys acting as a casual advisor to the SLFS Board. He will be leaving Vancouver in spring 2000, but wants to remain in touch. Jason Kuzminski , B.A.(Saskatchewan), M.A.(McMaster), is a second-year student in the Faculty of Law and currently chairs the litigation committee. Jason is currently working on projects involving constitutional law and Charter rights. His principal concerns are civil liberties and civil rights. In addition to working with the SLFS, he participates in the Law Students' Legal Advice Program, providing free legal advice to low-income individuals throughout the Greater Vancouver Area. Brian Sims, B.A.,History (Queen's) is a second year student in the Faculty of Law and a member of the litigation committee. Brian has worked as an advocate for the Downtown Eastside Resident's Association and as a result has a keen interest in residential tenancy issues. In addition to being involved with the SLFS, Brian is currently working at the Youth Millennium Project as well as volunteering for the Law Student's Legal Advice Program. Lisa Skakun has a B.A. in History and is currently a second-year student in the Faculty of Law at UBC. Prior to starting law school, Lisa was a corporate paralegal and active volunteer organizer of corporate fundraising activities for groups such as Loving Spoonful, The United Way and the Canadian Cancer Society. She continues to volunteer with Aids Vancouver and Camp Goodtimes, a residential camp for children affected by cancer. As a member of the SLFS's litigation committee, Lisa is concentrating on issues involving student debt.
