We are running a National Ad Campaign to search for clients

The Student Legal Fund Society is a recent addition to the student-run societies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver and is the first of its kind at a Canadian university. It was incorporated on September 30, 1998.

The Society's mandate is to "provide advisory, legal, and financial assistance to fund, initiate and continue advocacy, lobbying and litigation to improve education and access to education at UBC and such other matters of law which set broad precedent and concern UBC students" (Constitution). The society has a board of seven directors and a Litigation Committee. The litigation committee (comprised of 2/3 law students and 1/3 lawyers) researches suggested cases and makes recommendations to the board on their advisability. Law students can receive course credits for their work. The board decides which cases the society should take on. The society's funding comes from a refundable $1 fee from each registered student.

In order to be a member of the society all one has to do is to give one's name and address to the society: during elections, AMS club days, or by dropping by the office. For community members, our membership fee is currently $15. All members can vote or run for the Board elections. These occur at the same time as the AMS elections every January. In the coming year we hope to bring a number of cases to court. We may be fighting for students' rights as tenants under the Residential Tenancy Act, fighting against discrimination of students when declaring bankruptcy under the Bankruptcy Act, and ensuring that collection agencies attempting to collect on defaulted student loans do so within the confines of the Debt Collection Act. We are currently searching for clients for all these cases on a national basis if you think that you might want to become a client please contact us.

You can reach the Society in its office, SUB 249F. Email us at slfs@direct.ca, or phone or fax us at (604) 822-1208.

The SLFS is always looking for new cases to undertake on behalf of students. Please contact us if you have any ideas for cases.
