Canadian Symbol Challenge

Welcome to this online activity.  This assignment will test your understanding of some of Canada's most identifiable symbols.  Just print out a copy of the fill in the blank quiz and you're ready to go.  This activity should take one period to complete.

Find the answers to the clues by visiting the designated sites listed below.  You don't have to go far to find the answers.  Just make sure you pay attention to the instructions listed above each link.  Have fun, follow the copyright rules and enjoy the sites.

HERE WE GO !!!

First print off a copy of the fill in the blank quiz.  Teachers can do this ahead of time and make enough copies for your students.  A trial run is also recommended.

Tip #1: An ideal way to carry out this assignment is to pair up students side by side, each with a computer.  Both computers should get to this page.  While one of the computers stays on this page to read the instructions, the second computer can be used to navigate the sites and complete the handout.

Tip #2: If you have many students involved in this activity, have them begin at different starting points.  This should decrease the chance of overloading a page with too many guests.

At this site you'll be visiting the Government of Canada's site on Canadian SymbolsNote that links to the rest of the site can be found in two places.  In two sections on the home page and from the menu drop down bar in the top right hand corner of the home page.  From the home page, connect through the link "NATIONAL FLAG".  Answer questions #1 and 2 on your handout.  Check the "Birth of the Canadian flag" using the left-side links and answer question #3 and 4.  Use the menu bar to connect to "THE ROYAL UNION FLAG" section and answer question #5.

We're still at Canadian Symbols for answers in the section "OTHER NATIONAL EMBLEMS".  Use this page and the links off the left-side to answer questions #6 - 9.

We'll finish with Canadian Symbols by investigating Canada's national anthem.  Check out the "NATIONAL ANTHEM" link and answer questions #10 and 11.
