Petroglyphs Provincial Park, Peterborough, Ontario

My wife, daughter and I visited Petroglyphs Provincial Park near Peterborough, Ontario in eastern Canada on June 8, 2000. The main feature of this park are aboriginal rock carvings, but this is a sacred site and picture taking is not allowed. The surrounding area is now a provincial park with an extensive trail system through the rolling granite hills of the Canadian Shield. There are many rocky outcrops, beaver ponds and small lakes. The weather was not particularly pleasant at the time we visited, so I concentrated on closeup photography. I am originally from the Peterborough area and used to hike into High Falls on the western edge of the park from Stoney Lake.

Mystry flower. The white pine needles in the background give a sense of scale. These flowers grow very close to the ground, most seem to lose the frilly ball at the end and the two petals, so the older flowers are just left with the purple cone shaped structure. If you can help me identify them, please let me know at selliot@direct.ca Canon EOS 3 camera, Sigma 105 f2.8 macro lens, Fuji Provia 100 F film.

Many thanks to PixNutz@aol.com who identified this plant, "On flower 496 of the Audubon Society Field Guide to N. American Wildflowers, it shows this flower to be a Fringed  Polygala,  (a.k.a. Gaywings, in the milkwort family), 3-7"  tall, leaves 3/4 - 1 1/2", flowers May-June in rich, moist woods, Manitoba to New Brunswick."
