John F. Lewis MNI, CRSP, P.Mgr.,
Principal Consultant
John Lewis is the holder of both Canadian and
Irish Master Mariner's Certificates. He has
sailed for 16 years in the Merchant Marine as
both a Master and Chief Officer - primarily on
chemical tankers.
He is a CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety
Professional) and holds a BC Instructor Diploma
in addition to other qualifications.
He was Manager of the BC Fire and Safety
Training Centre at Maple Ridge from 1987 to 1997
when he left to form his own marine consulting
company - John Lewis and Associates. In addition
to training he acts as a safety and risk
management consultant.
John has taught marine
shipboard fire fighting for the Alaska State
Fire Services Training Center in Juneau, Alaska.
He presented the "Port and Marina
Emergencies" Seminar at MITAGS (Maritime
Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies)
presented by the Maryland Fire & Rescue
Training Institute in October 1998. He has also
presented an "Overview of marine fire
fighting" to MFSA (Maritime Fire and Safety
Administration) Portland OR (1999) and to
Battalion 6 of Los Angeles City Fire Department (1999).
In addition to British Columbia Fire
Departments, he has also presented courses in
marine fire fighting to Toronto Fire Services.(see article).
He taught Crowd Control on board cruise ships
and ferries and worked with both BC Ferries and
MOTH Inland Ferries on Evacuation (Survival Craft)
Drills and Interagency Response (with fire
departments).
John makes regular presentations at
educational conferences. His latest contributions

John Lewis and Associates' clients include
municipal fire departments, port authorities, and
major industrial corporations as well as the
cruise and shipping industry. John currently is
Chair of the IFSTA (International Fire Service
Training Association) Marine Firefighting
Committee and a member of the National Working
Group on Marine Chemical Emergency Response for
Canadian Coast Guard. He is active with the Fire
Training Officers' Association of BC and is a
Director of the BC Branch of the Nautical
Institute (a worldwide association of shipmasters.)
He was Secretary of the Institute[?] from 1996 to
1999.
