Tip of the Week
FILTERING WINE
Filtering your finished wine has a number of advantages, and I have had a lot of questions about this subject.
Firstly it should be pointed out that filtering is not a necessary step. Beautifully clear wine can be had by carefully racking the wine several times. Also note that the purpose of filtering is not to remove cloudiness, or to cut down on the number of rackings. Filtering polishes the wine and gives it an extra clear sparkle. Removing the finest of particles of sediment with a filter will give it a cleaner taste and help make it store for a longer period of time.
Most wine supply stores will rent a wine filter for little or no cost other than the cost of the replacement filters themselves. One can be purchased for as little as about $100. Canadian. Follow the instructions carefully !
