| The roots of Reflexology can be traced back centuries to India, China, and Egypt. However Reflexology as we know it today began with Dr. William Fitzgerald (though at the time it was under a different name). As an ear, nose and throat specialist in Connecticut he discovered that pressing firmly over certain parts of the hands, toes and other parts of the body caused anesthesia. This was so effective that he was able to replace cocaine in minor operations.
He divided the body into 10 longitudinal zones and illustrated the connection between each internal organ and zones. This became known as the Zone Therapy which he published in his book "Zone Therapy" in the 1900's. In 1919 Dr. Joe S. Riley, a chiropractor, discovered horizontal zones on the feet and the body. He also worked with facial and ear points, recommending them for cold feet, paralysis, and thyroid problems which was published in his book "Zone Therapy, Simplified". In the 1920's Eunice Ingham, a therapist and student of Dr. Riley, continued to chart the feet and developed it into a method called Reflexology. Her book "Stories the Feet Can Tell" and its sequel "Stories the Feet Have Told" are still being used by practitioners today. |
