Fat Kids Float

Shutyerfuckinface and Gorge Records recording artists, Fat Kids Float, have two tape releases to their credit, Flabbergast (1993), and Party Nut Job (1994).

Armed with a four track recorder and lots of spare time, Fat Kids Float are Victoria's best kept garage secret. Who are Fat Kids Float? Joe plays guitar and screams, Graeme plays bass and sings, and as is typical with all Gorge Records' bands, drummers are hard to keep, and so Flabbergast was recorded with Travis, and Party Nut Job featured James Macous.

Flabbergast was recorded at SHACK and KNUNGER studios in March 1993 by the amazingly talented Graeme McIntyre.

Party Nut Job was produced by Graeme and Joe in October 1994 at Flophouse Studios until Todd came home and said that if Joe wanted to turn the house into a recording studio, he was going to move out, so it was finished at KNUNGER studios.

Curious? That's too bad 'cause the releases are rare, "...er uh collector items...so to speak" (Pete Townshend 1982).

Never fear however, 'cause the Kids reformed as Nuts 'n Gum. Armed with a keyboard amp to power the vocals, a bassist who lived in a different city and hadn't played the bass in years and a practice space that no one appreciated them at, Nuts 'n Gum were Victoria's answer to...well, not much at all. Practice #1, 10 X 10 upstairs room at the Flophouse, hi-hat held together by a pencil, a fretless bass (how do you tune one of those things?), and no songs, it was post-high school bliss. Oh yeah, and yet another drummer...enter Dave.

Also armed with a four track recorder and the much less talented Shawn, Nuts 'n Gum recorded some tapes, not for commercial release, but for listening to and saying "wow, we really suck...let's play some gigs!"

And so it was decided. They quickly threw some songs together, renamed themselves (to be discussed later) and found their way to Parksville/Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island's retirement capital, where they played their first show to enthusiastic music starved teenagers. They would return periodically to this small retirement community over the next couple of years to watch the transformation from All-Ages capital of Vancouver Island to "Hello Qualicum Beachaaa!" (Spinal Tap 1989).

As to the name thing, we're sorry to admit, Nuts 'n Gum became Treecrusher. Two bands looked so much better on the web page...

Well, the rest of the story can be seen on the Treecrusher home page.
