Frederick J. Kay is a self-taught artist who has been carving for more than twenty years. He was originally inspired by the work of his grandfather, also a master carver. In the past, Most of his work was done in Arbutus wood, a hardwood native to the Pacific Northwest. Very eclectic, his subjects have ranged from fish and wildlife to Old West themes, portraits, to name but a few. His carvings feature prominently in the collections of such distinguished Canadians as artist Ken Kirkby and scientist/ environmentalist David Suzuki and have won numerous awards, both in Canada and the US. Included in these are top prize at the Canadian Fish Carving Championships, four Best of Show, one runner-up, five Best of Division, and two "Carver's Choice" awards. Frederick also judges carving shows and competitions and has donated a number of valuable works over the years in support of various environmental organizations. Realism, attention to detail and life-like animation characterize the artist's work and place him among the foremost of North American carvers today.
