Welcome new and renewal members
This
newsletter is especially to welcome new members to the Canadian Masters
Cross Country Ski Association and to welcome back those who have rejoined
as a result of the Championships held at Silver Star this spring.
What
do you think of the name? Its what I could come up with, but not that
original- do you have suggestions for a name? What about the format
and layout?- ideas welcome.
First
of all I need your help. What do you want to see to remain a member
of the Association. You have joined or rejoined at the Silver Star Canadian
Masters Championships and MCC is eager to count you as happy members
in future years as well as this one. But we need to know what will keep
you here. There are plenty of accomplished Master skiers in BC, but
a good number are not involved in our Association. Just compare the
names of Masters in the BC Loppet results to the membership in our organization;
we miss quite a few Masters. Master's cross country is too small to
be fragmented and to lose the ideas and talent. BACK TO TOP
As
for me
Because
I am new to the Association in the grand sounding role of director for
BC here is a bit of my skiing background. I have skied cross country
since about 1975 when I lived in Whitehorse, and began my skiing with
two other novices Henk Waterreus and Peter
Steele. We used to get together at lunch from our respective
jobs for a ski (read race) around the Whitehorse 10k trails almost at
any temperature. Racing each other every day was a great, if tiring,
way to start and we kept each other honest.
In
1981, when we in Whitehorse hosted the first World Cup races in North
America I was president of the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski club. It
was an exciting time. By then our group of three masters had been skiing
for some years and we competed in the masters categories at those events
without total ignominy. Henk and I are both still at it.
In
1984 my family and I moved to Nova Scotia and I found out what the skiing
is like there- bad. It snows alright, but it almost always melts right
away so you pretty well have to be out there when the storm is on.
When
I returned to BC a few years later I had pretty much given up skiing;
my daughter got me back on the right track after a few years of not
putting on skis. Since then I have competed in as many of the BC loppets
as I can make and I thoroughly enjoy the competition. In 1997 I went
to my first World Masters at Fogaria in northern Italy- a great time
which I thoroughly enjoyed.
My
most recent competitions were the Masters Championships at Vernon in
March about which more later. Two locals who keep me working hard are
Per Gaarder and Jim Bishop
as I try to catch up to them.
For
work I am a consulting geologist- that's a euphemism for unemployed
these days. But I do quite a lot of volunteer work for several professional
geoscience organizations. BACK TO TOP
What your $15 gets you
In case
you wondered your $15 pays for Canadian Masters membership benefits
including voting rights within MCC and this newsletter three times
a year. Membership also entitles individuals to compete in National
Masters and World Masters Championships. It allows members to buy
the MCC racing suit (WOW- that too!) and to participate in the annual
draw for skis, which benefits the CCC National Junior Program. As
well MCC membership supports strong representation of Canadian views
at the World Masters level and entitles MCC to bid on hosting the
World Masters Championships. Membership further supports Provincial
units to bid on the Canadian Masters Championships each year and
helps maintain the MCC website. BACK TO TOP
Speaking of web sites
The Association
has a new web site: http://x-c.com
or http://x-c.com/clubs/masters/master.htm
Add your
name and email address to the database so you can be notified of
developments when they happen. Also post your opinions in the "Speak
your Mind" section and read other opinions. There is information
on summer training, peaking for races, and staying at your peak.
As well the association Newsletter is all there if you prefer to
see it digitally. This is a great site maintained by John
Roberts who you may have met at the Canadian Masters Championships
in Vernon.
And the
World Masters Association site is:http://www.spectraweb.ch/~jschel/frame_e.html
For those
of you with access to the web there is also another site at: http://www.xcskiworld.com
This is
another great site for masters with a complete guide on rollerskiing,
a section on how to manage your training and conditioning year,
a section on hill training, another good one called "Are you training
hard enough?". There is a section on warmups and cooldowns, how
to do sit ups correctly, and a whole lot of stuff on dryland training
including ski bounding, running versus walking and lots else. This
site also has about as many links world wide as you will ever want.
If you haven't seen this one its time you did.
While
we're on the subject don't forget the Cross Country Canada site at: http://www.canada.x-c.com
This site is focused on the National Ski team and Junior racing but there
is lots for masters here as well with schedules and training tips etc.
Also here you will find links to clubs across Canada as well as the various
provincial organizations for cross country. I have no idea how many members
have web access. Let me know your email address when you return your fees
so I can get a feeling of how many can not get this information and then
judge whether it would be worth to abstract some of the material on the
web for the newsletter. BACK TO TOP
Silver
Star Canadian Champs
In Vernon this March
about 150 people participated in the week-long Canadian Championships,
which were fun, well organized and held on great trails, with lots of
snow, excellent grooming and brilliant weather; it couldn't have been
better. The Sovereign Lake club and especially Stan Eaman and Ray Wagner
did BC Masters skiing proud; they deserve thanks and a big pat on the
back. It was great to see so many masters there, especially from BC and
Alberta, and as usual there was a good Ontario contingent and surprisingly,
to me, from Newfoundland; too bad Quebec was not represented. If you are
interested to have a copy of the race results I can send them. The information
is also available on the web at x-c.com. BACK TO TOP
Thanks
Richie- a job well done
For us all I thank
Richie Mann for a job well done over the past four years as BC Director
for the Association. Volunteer jobs represent a significant commitment
of time and energy. Richie brought the warmth of his personality, his
long-time commitment to Master's skiing and his thoroughness to our organization
and we thank him. I aim to build on his efforts.

Millenial
Membership
The badge herewith
is for new members. By the way the year for the Association runs from
May 1 to April 30. The membership card is for your wallet- if you don't
have enough other stuff in there. Strictly speaking the membership you
paid at Silver Star is for the 98-99 Season which ends April 30, 99. But
as that was pretty late in the year and in order to keep you coming your
fees will count also for the next season. So you are paid up till April
30, 2000 and automatically become a Millennium Master. But we still need
you to sign the membership form for liability reasons. For your convenience
I include the Membership renewal form and have completed the information
you supplied when you joined. If the information is correct you need only
sign where indicated and return it to me. If incorrect please indicate
changes.
Membership
Fees
Canadian Masters Cross
Country Ski Association has decided to eliminate the second Family member
fee. This means that the annual fee shall be $15 for each member of the
family. Thanks to Marcia Beckner Marcia Beckner provided the centrefold
photos reproduced here. They show some of the people who were there and
give an idea of the conditions. Thanks Marcia.
