Introduction

At this point in the course, you have learned how to operate a 35mm camera and the basics of photographic composition. Your teacher has been approached by Photolife Magazine to do a photo spread for their upcoming edition. She has decided to give her students the opportunity to submit their work for this assignment. What an opportunity, your work displayed in Photo-life magazine, it could be the break that you have been waiting for. You need to fulfill the criteria below to be a contender for this honour.

Criteria

Photolife magazine is doing a spread on famous photographers of the past and they want a contemporary interpretation of their work to be represented alongside the photographs of the masters. Your first task is to educate yourself on six photographers from the past as listed under process. The magazine requires you to submit the negatives, the contact print, test strips and the five 8 x 10 inch photographs printed in black and white. These photographs must be matted and presented in the most effective way possible. The magazine also want you to make a presentation of your work to their editorial staff using a PowerPoint presentation.

Process

1. Take a look at the web sites below to research the types of photographs that are indicative of the six photographers. Create a Power Point Presentation which will store examples of each of their work as well as yours. Each photo must include a description of the photographer's method of shooting his / her subject matter and the reasons for their importance in art history. You need to do the same for your photographs.

2. Pose your model or select your landscapes carefully to closely resemble the work of the photographer you have chosen to emulate. You need to record your aperture and shutter speed settings for each frame. Take at least 5 frames of each subject. Use various angles and bracket (use different combinations of aperture and shutter speed) to ensure the best possible exposure.

3. Develop and dry your film according to normal procedures and store the negs. in negative sleeves.

4. Make a contact sheet from your negatives, label the sheet including the shutter speeds and apertures from your log. Consult with your teacher when choosing the best frames to print.

5. Make a test strip showing the correct exposure for each of your images. Record the exposure time for the strips on a piece of making tape on the back of the test strip.

6. Print the five photos in a 8x10 inch format, once record the exposure times for each of the prints.

7. Mount/display your work in a way that will catch the PhotoLife editor's eye.

8. Critique your modeling partner's photos by using the  Evaluation Page, be sure to give constructive criticism to the other photographer to improve their print quality.

9. Fill out the famous photos quiz and email to me

10. Make a Power Point Presentation of your work and that of your partner's along with examples by the photographer(s) whom you have researched. Present this to the class in a dry run pitch of your project before presenting it to Photo-life Magazine.  Here some links to various photographers that will help to get you started.

Ansel Adams

Richard Avedon

Alfred Eisenstaedt

Alfred Steiglitz

Imogen Cunningham

Dorothea Lange

Evaluation

Students will be graded on not only the artistic and technical quality of their photographs, but also on the slide show presentations and their critique of each other's work. You will be expected to identify the photos of the six artists you have researched on the quiz site. Meeting the deadlines set out for this project are essential to your success.  You also need to complete the self evaluation section on the  Evaluation Page , print it out and include it with your assignments.

Conclusion

Now that you have completed this photography assignment.  I hope that you are now more aware of a few of the major historical photographers of the past and the styles of photography that they worked in.  I will submit your portfolio of images to PhotoLife magazine and hopefully your work will be accepted for publication.
