MuchMusic Interview - Bill Welychka (BW) - "Believer" video premiere interview
(first 30 seconds or so lost)
| BW: | I'm mad at somebody... |
| CK: | I'll find out who you should be mad at, and I'll do something about it. I really don't know why that hasn't happened yet. I was just mentioning I've been to MusiquePlus a couple times already. I think it just has to do with the way we've been building the record, and where it's taken me. I've done an East tour, but things are quick... I don't know... I guess I just haven't gotten here. |
| BW: | Well, better late than never.... that's not true... should've been here sooner... Anyways, this is Chantal Kreviazuk, Under these Rocks and Stones, the debut album. This all started from a little tape... the typical story to making it in the biz.. but you submitted a tape? |
| CK: | Yeah, it was actually maybe going to be an indie record, actually. I had gotten the funds to do an indie record. After recording some of the songs, people around me that were helping me with it said "Hey, this is really good... why don't we send it off and see what happens.... take it one step further..." So I said... "ok.." |
| BW: | So, that's neat, cause you're from Winnepeg, and you're still there. SO you're one of the few people who've proven you don't have to move to Toronto or Montreal or Vancouver or New York... |
| CK: | CK: Well, we have airplanes and mail now. We can send things and fly places. Telephone helps... |
| BW: | And that's great that you're still there. |
| CK: | Yeah, it's great. I mean, I don't get a lot of time home anymore, but it is nice when I'm there. |
| BW: | Ok, now, I assume that the demo was pretty stripped, pretty raw. Maybe most of the songs were just you and your piano. |
| CK: | Yeah, a couple songs were just piano and myself singing. And on the record, they're totally different now. They're really produced. And then there's other songs that were really produced for the demo tape, and that are stripped down on the record. So they've evolved and changed a lot. |
| BW: | That's what I was going to ask. What was your reaction when all of a sudden you heard big drums and big guitars on some of the songs that were maybe...? |
| CK: | Well, it was nice. It's a nice change. It's fresh and it sort of inspired me. And I went with it... I enjoyed it. |
| BW: | Good sounding album. |
| CK: | Thank you. |
| BW: | You know what today is? International Women's Day. Women's? or Womyn's? |
| CK: | I'd say "womyn's"... |
| BW: | So, I have to ask this... I don't know if it's a media thing when people talk about this trend where all these women are all coming out now and getting notoriety. Is it frustrating to be what some people may be perceiving as a trend or a movement that women are all of sudden getting all this attention? |
| CK: | Well, I guess only time will tell.... |
| BW: | There's always been women in music... but for some reason people are writing about it... |
| CK: | Yeah, there's a lot right now. I've been asked this question quite a bit lately. Generally my feeling is that I think women are just in a universal way coming out, coming to their own more. And they have more opportunity, and basically we're equal. Maybe in past years, perhaps women didn't feel quite as comfortable with revealing themselves, and their skills and their crafts...and now we are, so we're out there, just like the guys. |
| BW: | Good. You're on tour right now? Solo tour? |
| CK: | Not right now. I did some touring with Amanda Marshall. But no, right now, I'm looking for a tour. I want to hit the West actually. |
| BW: | Ok, that tour was just you and the piano? |
| CK: | Yes it was. |
| BW: | So, you'll have a band sometime? |
| CK: | I don't know. I don't know what's going to happen. We'll see. |
| BW: | Also, we have a lot of US viewers. And we have to let them know that this CD;s released April 8? |
| CK: | I wish. The first single will be out in April, but I don't think I'll get the record out onto the sheleves until the following month. |
| BW: | I wish you all the luck. Very well deserved. |
| CK: | Thank you very much. |
| BW: | I also have to wish you luck because tomorrow you're nominated for a Juno award. What, you don't want to talk about that? It's a big accomplishment. |
| CK: | Yeah, I'm flattered about being nominated.. |
| BW: | Look at you! "Who cares?" It's a big deal... |
| CK: | You think? |
| BW: | Ok, I'm going to be there, and I'm going to be the one cheering the loudest for you. |
| CK: | Oh, thank you very much. |
| BW: | So, if you hear some goof in the audience yelling for Chantal, that's me. |
| CK: | <giggle> Thank you very much. |
| BW: | Ok, what we're going to do right now is look at your latest video "Believer". I know that Alanis was asked for a year and a half if You oughtta know was about a very evil guy. Sounds like the same guy you wrote "Believer" about. A very bad bad guy... |
| CK: | Well, originally, it was about this stranger that was a complete creep one night when I was working in a lounge playing the piano. But as I sing it more and more, I realize it's about a lot of people. So, it changes from night to night when I sing it... |
| BW: | You would never smash someone in the face with a microphone... would you? If you had to you would? |
| CK: | Ummm... actually I dream all the time I'm punching someone in the face, but in real life, I don't think I could do it... |
| BW: | Very nice to meet you. |
| CK: | Very nice to meet you too.... |
