I used burnt umber wash here as a companion to the brick red underpaint, to define the pencil drawing, then painted over in black, keeping just enough underpaint for contrast or variety. I left the brown where the knots cross the main body, thinking it's enough: if the line does not need touching up, it is more lively left untouched. Adn of ccourse, backgroundswith extra black can make the foreground figure easier to see. [In private collection since 2010.06.19]
