This design was first drawn freehand with oil paint on a silkscreen, then printed on paper to produce this spiral with the foreground and background reversed. It consists of interlocking C-scroll paths which widen into trumpets, and converge again toward the centre of adjacent spirals. Four triple spirals, or triskels, alternate with double spirals around the circumference of the circle, hooking up in the middle to forming one continuous pathway.
Celtic maze patterns are very similar to spiral patterns, except that they are straight lines and angles instead of continuous curves. Here the curved lines of the spiral have been flattened to feel like a maze. I explored the relation between maze and spiral patterns in my books, Celtic Design: Spiral Patterns, and Celtic Design Maze Patterns, published by Thames & Hudson, London and NY, 1993.
