This dynamic design is from the eight-century Ardagh Chalice in the Irish National Museum, Dublin. It decorates the underside of a cup, and is only a couple of inches wide in the original. Two circular bands surround a round gem of clear crystal glass, here replaced by a four-leaved knot, inspired by an enamelled stud elsewhere on the cup. The outside ring has five repeating units, each an S-scroll of triple spirals, or triskels, linked by double spirals. The inner ring has three pairs of long jawed beasts, which may be read as either facing each other, or as back to back, with long ears and tails.
