Each drawing is 17x22 cm (7" x 8"1/2) goose quill and home-made oak-gall ink on Strathmore acid-free Bristol paper. Drawn freehand, without erasing or touching up.

CELTIC DESIGN: ILLUMINATED LETTERS by Aidan Meehan
I have a few signed copies of this book left, the 4th in the Celtic Design Series I wrote and illustrated, published by Thames & Hudson. The writing is done by hand throughout, the book itself an illuminated manuscript, with hundred of illuminated letters redrawn in black and white from the Celtic manuscripts, showing all the details clearly, with text describing each detail and putting it in historical contexts, tracing the Celtic illumination from its origin in 7th-century Ireland through to the 13th century. It includes a section of illuminated ampersands (the character &, which is shorthand for the Latin word, "et", meaning "and") from the Book of Kells, which are themselves a repertory of Celtic ornament; and a section on the Irish Goth style of the 11th century. Would make a suitable gift, I think, for an artistic young person, crafter, or anyone interested in either calligraphy or Celtic heritage.

Article on Germano-Celtic Motifs looks at the very close relation between the Celtic art of Britain in the early 7th century, and that of the Anglo-Saxon art from Sutton Hoo, linked to art from Scandinavian cultures on the continent, both Christian and Pagan, showing how Germanic and Celtic art form the basis of medieval Celtic art. For anyone interested in the art of the Staffordshire gold hoard from the same period, this article treats of the eagle heads, animal patterns and step patterns similar to the ones found there, placing it it the 1st quarter of the 7th-century.
