Vancouver to Mission, BC

If there's a better way to celebrate the first day of summer than by setting off on a bike trip, I can't imagine what it would be.

Just after 10 am on a beautiful June morning I wheeled the bike out onto the porch, locked the front door, and headed east.

I followed a combination of quiet bike routes and residential streets through Vancouver and Burnaby, ending up atop a hill in New Westminster just above the Patullo Bridge. I crossed the scary Patullo on the sidewalk, grunted up the mother of all hills behind the Scott Road SkyTrain station to 96 Avenue, and headed due east on 96 to Fort Langley. From there the (free) Albion Ferry takes you north across the Fraser River to Highway 7, far to the east of the 'paved paradise' of Maple Ridge and Haney, and only about 20 km of relatively quiet road from Mission, my destination for Day 1.

I arrived in Mission at about 3:30, feeling pretty pleased with myself, and had a nap on the grass outside my friend Steve's apartment until he got home from work.

Shower, pub & beer - a great end to the first day!
