MEDALS

The Ski for Light medals are made in gold silver, and bronze. The outer edge is red enamel with the words "SKI FOR LIGHT" at the top, "CANADA" at the bottom, a small maple leaf on either side, and "FIRST," "SECOND," or "THIRD" in braille on

the back. The three medals are given for each of the various race categories. If there are only two participants in a category, then both the gold and silver are awarded. This type of medal was first awarded at the Castlegar event in 1996. Prior to that, we had a different type of medal.

The relay race medal is in honour of Ivar Reinsbakken, a Norwegian who came to Canada with his family and settled in Castlegar, BC, in 1952. He was very dedicated to Ski for Light and was instrumental in the success of the first Ski for Light ever held in Canada at Castlegar, BC in 1978.
The relay race medal is a gold colour, depicting a skier and his guide, with the words "SKI FOR LIGHT CANADA" across the top, "IVAR REINSBAKKEN RELAY" across the bottom, and "RELAY" in braille on the back. Pic of relay medals

The very first Ivar Reinsbakken Relay medal was presented to Ivar's wife, Gunvor Reinsbakken, by Ski for Light President Curt Jensen in January, 1996. In following years, a medal will be presented to each member of the winning relay race team. This means that, under normal circumstances, four relay medals will be given out each year.
